The Truth about Andropause |
Its true
menopause is not just for women. Endocrinologists and reproductive medicine professionals
agree that approximately 35-40% of all males 40 years of age or above experience male menopausal symptoms, a condition known as
andropause.
The symptoms of andropause may include fatigue,
irritability, decreased libido, mood swings, depression, difficulty achieving and
maintaining erections, increase in body fat, decrease in lean muscle, low levels of iron
in the blood (anemia), and loss of bone density. A majority of the mainstream medical
community has historically ignored these symptoms, attributing them to the normal male
aging process. However, as more men make their doctors aware of their maladies, more
attention is being paid to finding an effective treatment for andropause.
Doctors now know that a decreased level of
testosterone can be a major contributor to andropause, but other risk factors include
smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, prescription and/or nonprescription drug use,
lack of exercise combine with unhealthy eating habits, poor circulation, high blood
pressure (hypertension), and psychological disorders.
Hormone therapy is one option for the treatment of
andropause, however only about 13% of men suffering with the condition have a low
testosterone level, and there is great debate in the medical community regarding what type
of testosterone levels need to be measured to
diagnose a man with andropause. The 13% of males
mentioned above represents the percentage of men with low levels of total
testosterone, meaning all types of testosterone combined. Many doctors believe that, in
order to obtain more accurate diagnoses, only the level of free active testosterones must
be evaluated. Incidentally, these levels test low in about 75% of men who experience
andropausal symptoms. This inconsistency among the medical community can result in
non-diagnosis or misdiagnosis, causing the sufferer more discomfort than is necessary.
